What is GST?

GST stands for Goods and Services Tax, which is a value-added tax (VAT) that is imposed on most goods and services sold for domestic consumption. The GST is a single, national tax that replaced a patchwork of state and local taxes in many countries, with the goal of simplifying the tax system and reducing compliance costs for businesses. The GST is typically applied at every point in the supply chain, from production to retail sale, with input tax credits allowed at each stage to reduce the burden of the tax on businesses.

In India GST is a comprehensive indirect tax that replaced several indirect taxes imposed by the Central and State Governments. GST was implemented in India on July 1, 2017 and it has been rolled out in multiple stages. India has a dual GST system, which means that GST is imposed at the national level by the Central Government and at the state level by the State Governments.

How GST works is, GST is to be paid on the value or selling price of the goods or services, but credit of GST paid on inputs can be taken, which means that the GST paid on purchases can be offset against the GST collected on sales. This eliminates the cascading of taxes, which means that taxes are not levied on taxes.
